Vivek Kumar : The Iconic Artist of India Illuminating the World
Vivek Kumar is an Indian artist and sculptor based in Gurugram. He is known for large public installations across India.
Early life in Bihar
Vivek Kumar comes from Bihar. His mother was a teacher and his father was a doctor. As a result, no one around him worked in art. Even so, he chose to follow his passion for it.
Bodh Gaya and the move to Delhi
His education began in Bihar. Later, Bodh Gaya shaped his creative side. The Buddhist monuments there sparked his imagination. As a result, he developed a deep interest in Bodhi art, which still influences his work.
In 2004, he moved to Delhi. At first, the climb was hard. However, his steady effort helped him grow quickly.
Universal India Studio
Today, Universal India Studio works with over 45,000 skilled artisans across India. The studio gives these artisans a platform to show their talent. It also creates more jobs.
Vivek promotes “Make in India” projects in every creation. His team works with many materials, including metal, non-metal, fiber, wood and canvas. In addition, the research and development team tests new material combinations.
G20 Summit, New Delhi
Vivek Kumar and his team designed the full concept for the G20 Summit venue at Pragati Maidan. At the entrance stood a 20-foot fiberglass Shankh. Inside, eight fiberglass discs, each eight feet wide, showed different themes. For example, they covered Vedic shlokas, modern India, space and Israel. Above the meeting hall, a ceiling painting showed Rajasthan’s culture. Meanwhile, the walls carried 452 fiberglass dias.
Delhi Airport, London and beyond
His work at Terminal 3 of New Delhi Airport includes four life-size bronze elephants in the departure hall. Gate 28 has “Rajasthan Royal Procession”, a 40×18 feet work. Gate 29 has “Mysore Dasara / Royal Procession”, a 20×18 feet work.
His art also appears in 33 countries. For example, a life-size bronze elephant with an Indian King stands in Vauxhall, Central London. In addition, his works are in museums and corporate offices around the world.
Landmark works across India
In India, Vivek Kumar created the 75-foot Amrit Minar at the Serum Institute of India. It honours the institute’s role in the COVID-19 vaccine. He also made the 80-foot stainless steel Droplet sculpture at Surat Diamond Bourse. Its diamond cuts symbolise the bourse as a diamond hub.
More recently, he created the bronze Gandhi and Patel statues in Ahmedabad. Together, they symbolise unity in India’s diverse landscape.
He also works with Bollywood and the film industry. Under Vivek’s guidance, Universal India Studio celebrates India’s many art forms. Therefore, it serves as a platform for artists across the country.
